The hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus) is the largest parrot in the world, reaching approximately 1 meter in length with an impressive wingspan. This magnificent bird, recognizable by its bright blue plumage and yellow circles around its eyes and the base of its beak, is native to the tropical forests and savannas of Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay.
The hyacinth macaw feeds mainly on palm nuts and hard fruits that it can crack open thanks to its powerful beak. It lives in small family groups and exhibits great intelligence and an ability to forge strong social bonds with its fellow macaws. These birds often nest in tree cavities and can lay one or two eggs per year.
Unfortunately, this species is considered "vulnerable" by the IUCN. The macaw is highly sought after in the illegal exotic animal trade.
