The trumpet hornbill (Bycanistes bucinator) is a large bird native to the tropical forests of Central and Southern Africa. It is recognizable by its distinctive black-and-white plumage, its large yellow beak topped with a helmet-shaped protuberance, and its loud call that resembles a trumpet, from which it derives its name.
This bird lives in family groups and feeds mainly on fruit, especially figs, but also consumes insects, small reptiles, and sometimes small mammals. It plays an essential role in seed dispersal due to its frugivorous diet. The trumpet hornbill spends a large part of its time in the canopy, where it moves nimbly by jumping from branch to branch.
The species is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, although some populations may be locally threatened by deforestation and habitat fragmentation.
