The white ibis (Eudocimus albus) is a common wading bird of the wetlands and mangroves of Central America, the Caribbean, and the southeastern United States. It is distinguished by its entirely white plumage as an adult, with a long, curved, orange-red bill and red legs. Juveniles, on the other hand, have brownish plumage before acquiring their white color.
This bird lives in colonies and is often observed foraging in marshes, mudflats, and wetlands. Its diet consists mainly of small aquatic invertebrates such as insects, crustaceans, and mollusks, but it also eats fish and amphibians. The white ibis uses its curved bill to probe the mud in search of prey.
The species is currently classified as Least Concern by the IUCN, as it is still widely distributed and relatively stable. However, it can be locally affected by wetland degradation and pollution.
