The African jacana (Scopus umbretta), also known as the Senegal jacana, is a medium-sized bird measuring approximately 50 cm in length. It has plain brown plumage and is easily recognizable by its hammer-shaped head, which gives it its name. Its beak is short and thick, and it has a crest that gives it this distinctive silhouette. This bird lives mainly in the wetlands of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly near marshes, rivers, and lakes.
The jacana is best known for its nest-building skills. It builds massive nests made of branches and mud, which can weigh up to 50 kg. Its diet mainly consists of small fish, amphibians, and aquatic insects.
The species is currently classified as "Least Concern" by the IUCN, as it is widely distributed in its natural habitat.
