The woolly monkey (Lagothrix lagotricha), also known as the woolly spider monkey, is a large primate of the tropical forests of South America, notably in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Brazil. It takes its name from its thick grey-brown fur which gives it a "woolly" appearance. It has a long prehensile tail, very useful for clinging to branches and moving through the canopy.

Woolly monkeys live in groups of 10 to 70 individuals and are very social. They feed mainly on fruit, but also consume leaves, seeds, and sometimes small invertebrates. Their arboreal lifestyle makes them dependent on dense and intact forests.

Currently, the woolly monkey is classified as vulnerable by the IUCN, with some subspecies even being endangered. Their population is declining due to deforestation, habitat fragmentation, as well as illegal hunting. Conservation efforts aim to protect their habitat and raise awareness among local populations.
